It is easy to get caught up in life, especially in the rush to classes or work. It is because of this that we often fail to see the challenges that the people around us are facing. Challenges that we ourselves maybe facing or may face in the future. It is important that we as a society do not try to avoid these challenges but be willing to address them instead.
It is with great pleasure that I welcome the comedians from Stand up for Mental Health to the University of Victoria campus. These individuals are here to highlight some these issues surrounding mental health and to show us that even in the face of adversity we can strive to move forward. They are here to bring us the message that in laughing at our challenges we rise above them. That's a valuable lesson for every university student to learn.
I am excited that members of the Stand Up for Mental Health program will be performing two shows at Cinecenta in the Student Union Building on October 27th at 2:15 and 4:15. It is through confronting the stigma associated mental illness that we can break down these barriers. The fact is, more than one in five Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime, and young Canadians-particularly those aged 15 to 24 years-make up a significant part of those statistics.
Adversity is only made harder when you think that you are alone in your struggles. The comedians from Stand up for Mental Health represent a diverse socio-economic, and cultural background. They help to prove that adversity affects everyone and all of us have the power to move through it.
Sincerely,
James Coccola
