Mental illness takes a staggering toll on society, both in terms of wasted human potential and millions of dollars of lost productivity. SFU researchers make important contributions to society's understanding and management of mental health disease, and SFU offers a number of programs that promote the mental and physical well-being of its students, staff and faculty, from counseling services to recreational activities.
To that end, I am particularly pleased to welcome the "Stand up for Mental Health" comedy troupe to Simon Fraser University. These courageous comedians will take the stage in the new SFU Woodward's complex to share their own personal stories. Stand up for Mental Health teaches standup comedy to people with mental illness as a form of therapy, an innovative and entertaining approach that has the added benefit of fighting prejudice and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental illness. It opens up the opportunity for dialogue and understanding, important steps on the road to recovery for both the individual and society.
As President of SFU, I strongly support this timely and important performance, and encourage you to take the opportunity to attend and enjoy a laugh or two as Stand Up for Mental Health works to change the public face of this debilitating disease.
Sincerely,
Andrew Petter, President and Vice-Chancellor,
Simon Fraser University
