Message from
Tom Traves President
Dalhousie University

University is an exciting time for new and returning students. For some, it represents the beginning of a new phase in one's life. For others, it signifies a continued commitment to learning, discovery and personal growth. To ensure the health and well-being of our students as they embark on their individual journeys at Dalhousie University, we offer an array of healthy lifestyle opportunities and advocate awareness on wellness issues. To this end, I am delighted to welcome members of the Stand Up For Mental Health comedy troupe to the Dalhousie campus.

Taking the stage to share their personal mental-health journeys, Stand Up for Mental Health's extraordinary comedians facilitate frank and inclusive discussions about mental health issues, dispelling the myths and stigmas associated with mental illness. It has often been said that laughter is the best medicine. Indeed, the benefits of the Stand Up For Mental Health program are unmistakable, both for comedians and audiences alike. Mental health consumers gain tremendous self-esteem from performing stand-up comedy in front of live audiences. The courage and candor they display in their performances serve to inspire each of us to do more to combat public stigma, prejudice and discrimination.

To the members of Stand Up for Mental Health, I wish to express my great appreciation for accepting our invitation to come to Dalhousie and engage with our on-campus and local community. As President of the University, I strongly support this initiative and eagerly await the opportunity to share a laugh as we share knowledge on mental health myths, strategies, services and supports.

Sincerely,

Tom Traves, President
